Intel’s second-generation Core Ultra Lunar Lake AI math breaks 100 trillion cycles

At the Intel Vision 2024 innovation conference, CEO Pat Kissinger once again revealed the next generation of ultra-low-power processors, Lunar Lake, to be named Core Ultra 200V series, which will take a leap in AI arithmetic.

Intel claims that the Lunar Lake processors will have an AI arithmetic of more than 100 TOPS (100 trillion times per second), which is a full three times more than the existing Meteor Lake processors!

Of this, the NPU unit alone will be able to deliver about 45 TOPS, which is as much as four times the current amount, and by itself will fulfill Microsoft's need to define the next generation of AI PCs.

Additionally, Lunar Lake CPU arithmetic is about 5TOPS, essentially unchanged, while GPU arithmetic tops out at about 50TOPS, a nearly 1.8x improvement.

As for the competition, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite has a total computing power of 75TOPS, the highest available, with the NPU alone providing 45TOPS, which means it's at the same level as Lunar Lake.

AMD's Ryzen 7040 series (Phoenix) has a total computing power of 33TOPS and an NPU power of 10TOPS, and the Ryzen 8040 series (Hawk Point), a simple upgrade, comes to a total computing power of 39TOPS, with the NPU power boosted to 16TOPS.

The next generation of Strix Point will realize a leap, the NPU part of the arithmetic increased by 3 times to 48TOPS, thus surpassing Lunar Lake, but the CPU, GPU part is not known, taking into account the overall beyond 100TOPS is not too difficult, after all, will be upgraded to the Zen5 CPU architecture, RDNA3 + GPU architecture.

Lunar Lake has been exposed several times, the current information shows upgraded to TSMC 3nm process, new CPU/GPU architecture, up to 4P + 4E 8 cores and 8 threads (does not support Hyper-Threading), 8 Xe-LPG architecture core graphics cores, will also be integrated with packaged memory, and the power consumption level 8W, 30W.

Model naming will be Core Ultra 200V series, a Core Ultra 5 234V is known.
