Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards will support DP 2.0 UHBR20 (80 Gbps)

The latest news is that the Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards based on the next generation RNDA3 will support the DisplayPort 2.0 standard. "Looks like RDNA3 supports the full DisplayPort 2.0 specification (UHBR20)," tweeted @kepler_l2, a well-known whistleblower.

UHBR stands for Ultra High Bit Rate Certification, which allows the highest connection throughput on compatible display cables. There are currently three levels of authentication, UHBR10, UHBR13.5, and UHBR20, each of which produces a different level of display output as long as the device receiving the connection provides the correct output.

The last level, UHBR20, offers 80 Gbps of bandwidth, much higher than HDMI 2.1, which offers 32 Gbps, and much higher than DisplayPort, which offers 48 Gbps of bandwidth.

A patch from AMD's Freedesktop labeled "DML changes to DCN32/321" confirms that AMD is preparing to add DisplayPort UHBR20. "DCN" stands for Display Core Next, developed by AMD.

When DCN of UHBR20 is enabled in DisplayPort 2.0, it can be calculated that the full resolution output that can be released is 16K image resolution. The output involves display stream compression or DSC, which will produce 10K output without any compression, or the capability of two HDR screens with 8K output and a 120Hz refresh rate on each display.
