Microsoft Announces New Super Resolution Technology API “DirectSR”

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024, Microsoft announced a new technology: a new API interface for super-resolution technology, "DirectSR".

This technology is designed for one-off development to support all major super-resolution technologies, including NVIDIA's DLSS, AMD's FSR, and Intel's XeSS.

Shawn Hargreaves, development manager of Microsoft's Direct 3D division, said at the meeting that at present, major GPU manufacturers have launched their own super-resolution technology, such as NVIDIA's "DLSS", AMD's "FSR", Intel's "XeSS" and so on.

However, game developers are faced with the pressure of adapting to multiple super-resolution technologies, and they need to spend a lot of time and effort to ensure that their games are compatible with different technologies.

Microsoft hopes that the introduction of "DirectSR" to better support the game super-resolution technology, whether on Windows PC or Xbox platform.

According to the introduction, DirectSR is a new DirectX API interface that runs on all supported hardware. Game developers simply call DirectSR and prepare the parameters, you can easily realize the support of all mainstream super-resolution technology.

AMD developer Rob Martin explained, "DirectSR integrates the core processing part of FSR2 into DirectSR, so game developers only need to prepare the necessary preprocessing and parameters, and the game can run smoothly without the need for additional FSR2 code."

Although Microsoft has not yet set a specific launch date, this unified API interface for super-resolution technology will undoubtedly bring great convenience to game developers.
