Winamp launches with Windows 11 compatible 5.9 Build 9999

After the 5.8 release in Beta form in October 2018, the classic media player Winamp has finally received the 5.9 Build 9999 Release Candidate (RC1) version recently. Initially designed to ensure compatibility with Windows 10, Winamp 5.8 was initially released in beta, but Winamp 5.9 now runs on the Windows 11 operating system.

Born at the turn of the century, Winamp was first introduced 25 years ago by American software developer Nullsoft. As a shareware for Windows 95, it quickly set the industry standard for MP3 playback.

By its millennium heyday, Winamp was competing with rivals like AIMP and Foobar2000. But as the tide turned, it came to a halt in 2013, 16 years after its birth.

Winamp 5.666, released on December 12 of the same year, has lasted for quite some time. The good news is that Winamp 5.9 will hopefully follow in its footsteps.

As far as we know, besides compatibility with Windows 11, Winamp 5.90 Build 9999 also brings the following improvements:

• Improved https:// streaming playback support
• Update and generate clean HTML playlist code
• [in_mkv] Add support for VP8
• [in_mod] Optimize playback experience for .itz, .mdz, .s3z and .xmz compression modules
• [ml_wire] Bring a new working podcast directory
• [out_ds] Improve correct display of device information in Unicode format

In addition, each new release brings a number of optimizations and bug fixes, and considering that Winamp 5.9 Build 9999 is still in the RC1 release candidate stage, we can expect more improvements to follow.

Finally, although Radionomy announced back in October 2018 that it was going to launch a new generation of Winamp 6, we have not yet waited for the delivery of the finished product.

Soon after, the company launched another campaign in September 2021 under the name "Winamp - The Ultimate Media Player" and actively sought beta testers.

But so far, nothing has changed (not even the so-called public beta version is in sight).
