Microsoft pushes Bing pop-up promotion to Chrome users

Recently a Windows user reported on the Reddit forums that when using Chrome, a new pop-up appears on the system to promote Microsoft's Bing search engine and Bing AI.

In the pop-up window, Microsoft focuses on Bing's AI features and says, Use Chrome to chat with GPT-4 for free! Have hundreds of conversations with BingAI daily and more.

The pop-up also offers the option to accept or decline, and if the user chooses to accept, they not only agree to Microsoft's terms of service and privacy policy, but also set Bing as the default search engine in Chrome.

Microsoft has graciously admitted that the pop-up is from its own house, with Microsoft spokeswoman Caitlin Roulston saying, "This is a one-time notification designed to give users the opportunity to set Bing as Chrome's default search engine."

And the pop-up will only appear once, and after it's turned off it will never appear again unless Microsoft decides to push it again.

Caitlin Roulston also describes this pop-up as a benefit for Windows users, arguing that those who accept the notification get more opportunities to utilize AI through Copilot.

Its emphasized, "We respect the right to offer users a choice, and they can also simply ignore this notification."
