Microsoft Windows 8.1 operating system officially ended service

To make Windows 8.1 users more aware that support for the outdated operating system is coming to an end on Jan. 10, 2023, Microsoft has issued a screen warning highlighting what will happen on and after said date.

"January 10, 2023 is the last day for Microsoft to provide security updates and technical support for computers running Windows 8.1," the blue warning screen reads." We're reaching out now to thank you for your loyalty and to help you prepare for the next step."

The warning notice began appearing last week with the release of the Windows 8.1 KB5015874 cumulative update. Users will see it when they log in to the OS, and there are two options to stop the warning: either select the "Remind me later" option (meaning after 35 days) or the "Remind me when the support period ends" option (only when Windows 8.1 reaches (the warning will be displayed only after the end of the support period). On the other hand, Microsoft says that those with managed Professional and Enterprise Edition devices as well as Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise and Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro devices will not encounter the warning.

It can be recalled that mainstream support for Windows 8.1 ends on January 9, 2018, although extended support begins after that date. However, on Jan. 10, 2023, Microsoft said all support will cease. With this, the company is encouraging users of older operating systems to make the necessary moves.

"If the device does not meet the technical requirements to run more recent versions of Windows, Microsoft recommends replacing the device with one that supports Windows 11," the multinational technology company said.
