Microsoft mistakenly adds Windows KB5017383 preview update to WSUS

Microsoft admits it was a mistake to list the Windows KB5017383 preview update in Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

"IT administrators using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) may notice that the Windows September 2022 Preview Update (referred to as "C" version) is listed in WSUS's Available Updates. This listing is an error," Microsoft Say. "Preview updates are generally available for manual import via the Microsoft Update Catalog and Windows Update."

While it won't affect home users, the bug could cause other issues for enterprise users, such as issues installing the September 2022 cumulative update preview for the .NET Framework.

"In environments where WSUS is configured to automatically approve updates and automatically reject superseded content, Windows September 2022 Security Updates may then be automatically rejected from the client view and automatically expire," Microsoft added.

Thankfully, Microsoft reports that the update has been removed from WSUS and has a workaround for those users who will experience automatic rejections and automatic expiration issues caused by bugs.

"If this happens, see the guidance for recovering rejected updates. Then run an update sync in the Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager or update management environment. Environments configured for security updates only should not reflect these symptoms."

Specifically, it affects client Windows versions: Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 11, version 21H1; Windows 10, version 20H2; Windows 10 and version 1809. Meanwhile, under the Server Windows version, affected systems include Windows Server 2022; Windows Server, version 20H2; Windows Server and version 1809. As of now, Microsoft says it is looking for ways to help these affected systems.

"The Windows September 2022 Preview will be removed from WSUS, and we are working on a solution to support customers who inadvertently import updates through WSUS. We expect a solution to be available in the coming days."
