AMD’s ruthless axing of two major product lines

AMD officially released a discontinued notice, announcing that CoolRunner CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Devices), Spartan FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) products are all discontinued, and there is no longer a subsequent upgrade, that is, the end of these two programmable product lines.

CPLD is a programmable logic device, is an important part of digital circuit design, the main role is to realize the digital logic function, can be programmed through the internal memory to change its function, and can be modified at any time to modify the contents of the program to change the circuit function.

CPLDs are highly programmable and have fast development cycles, and are widely used in the fields of digital signal processing, communications, computers, control, and test and measurement.

AMD 2022 February formally acquired Xilinx (Xilinx), got all of its products, personnel and other resources, the most core is of course a variety of FPGA products, and for CPLD, AMD was once also very important, saying that it is the market leader, AMD can provide a full circle set of solutions, and even labeled the product as "AMD Creation ".

But obviously, AMD does not want to play.

The abandoned products specifically include: XC9500XL, CoolRunner XPLA 3, CoolRunner II, Spartan 3, Spartan 3A, Spartan 3AN, Spartan 3E, Spartan 3ADSP XC/XA.

Of these, the CoolRunner I was a long time ago, and the CoolRunner II product was available in 2002, while the Spartan II and Spartan 3, which were abandoned at the same time, were released in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

According to the schedule, the final order deadline for these products is June 29, 2024, and orders placed after March 30, 2024 are non-cancellable and non-returnable.

The final delivery date is December 28, 2024, and the warranty ends on June 27, 2025 for quality issues.
