AMD LABS: Zen4 processor with AM4 package interface

AMD will launch its Ryzen 7000 series processors in the second half of the year, with a new 5nm process, Zen4 architecture, DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0 bus and, for the first time, an AM4 to AM5 interface, which must be combined with the new 600 series motherboard.

So, if you are still using the old AM4 platform, can you use Zen4 without changing the motherboard?

It may seem like an impossible dream, but it's not!

According to sources familiar with the matter, AMD does have a Zen4 processor in its LABS that encapsulates the AM4 interface, but the company has yet to make a final decision on whether to launch it or not.

One problem is memory support. The Zen4 architecture is known to support ONLY DDR5 memory, while the AM4 platform supports DDR4 memory, so Zen4 must support DDR4 memory to be compatible with the AM4 interface.

There are two possibilities: one is that the Zen4 has a BUILT-IN DDR4 memory controller, which has not been officially announced, or the other is that the IO chip design is replaced and the memory controller becomes DDR4.

Hopefully AMD will finally bring the Zen4 AM4 to market, giving users one more choice.
