Former executive: Microsoft encourages Xbox and PlayStation console wars

The competition between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 can be seen more as a competition with itself: the former's various technical problems, for example, and the latter's Red Ring of Death. You hardly heard the words "Console Wars" back then, and there was little debate about who was better than who.

In a guest appearance on the Front Office Sports podcast, former Xbox executive Peter Moore said that Microsoft encouraged console wars in the '00s and '10s, citing technology media outlet Gamespot.

We encouraged console wars, not to create categories, but to challenge each other," Moore said. And I used to say to others at the time that the 'each other' in this case would be Microsoft and Sony. If Microsoft hadn't implemented this philosophy in the Xbox launch, the Xbox gaming experience would have been awful after the Red Ring of Death, and there would be no comparison of games now".

Moore left Microsoft in 2017 to become CEO of EA Sports, then Liverpool Football Club, and now works as an executive at Unity. Moore left Microsoft in 2017 for EA Sports, then became CEO of Liverpool Football Club, and now works as an executive at Unity.
