Installing an old macOS system tutorial and download

If your Mac is not compatible with the latest version of macOS, you may be able to upgrade to an earlier version of macOS, such as macOS Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, or High Sierra.

Check compatibility

The version of macOS that comes with your Mac is the earliest version available to it. For example, if your Mac comes with macOS Big Sur, it will not work with macOS Catalina or earlier. If a macOS is not compatible with your device, the App Store or installer will let you know if this is the case. If you try to install a version of macOS earlier than the one currently installed, the installer will tell you that the version to be installed is too old to open on the current version of macOS.

Download macOS on Mac using Safari

Safari browser will use the following link to find older installers in the App Store. After downloading the installer from the App Store, the installer will open automatically.

The Safari browser will download the following old installer as a disk image (named "InstallOS.dmg" or "InstallMacOSX.dmg"). Please open the downloaded disk image and open the .pkg installer in it. It will install an App named "Install [version name]". Please open this App from the "Applications" folder to start installing the operating system.
