Snapchat hits the Microsoft Store as a PWA

Snapchat is finally available in the Microsoft Store as a Progressive Web App (PWA). It is built on the newly launched web version of the app and relies on Microsoft Edge. with this, it is guaranteed that all the features of the web version of the app will be available in Snapchat's PWA with an installation size of only 1.4 MB.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 users can already install Snapchat PWA on their computers, where the OS will somehow allow it to work like a native app since it relies on Edge. once installed, it will give you an icon on your start menu and will even show you notifications. In addition, bundling it with Edge keeps it up to date.

This news is a bit surprising given the way Snapchat has treated Microsoft over the years. It can be recalled that in the past, the company refused to create a dedicated application for Windows phones, refusing to offer its services to a specific group of people who use Microsoft's operating system.

Nonetheless, other developers tried to bring a taste of Snapchat to the Windows ecosystem a few years ago by launching third-party Snapchat apps in the Windows Phone App Store. One of them was an app called 6snap, which was removed from the Service in 2014 along with other third-party apps. To stop Windows phone users from using such apps, Snapchat even locked the accounts of anyone using the "unauthorized program".

Years later, no official Snapchat app for Windows phones has been released. Some believe this contributed to the device's demise in the past, but clearly, other factors should be considered, especially Google's actions. With that in mind, it's no wonder there are rumors that Microsoft is trying to build its own mobile app store.
