Apple may change the “Hey Siri” wake-up word to “Siri”

Apple is reportedly working on changing Siri's wakeup phrase from "Hey Siri" to "Siri." The tech giant has been working on this for months and is expected to roll out the change next year or the year after, if all goes according to plan. As Mark Gurman points out, the change will require "a lot of AI training and basic engineering work."

Apple wants to ensure that the "Siri" cue will be equally effective in many different accents and dialects, even though it will have one less syllable to pick up the signal correctly. This will be one of the main complicating factors in implementing this change. While it will require some hard work by Apple engineers to develop this feature, competitors like Amazon and Microsoft implemented similar changes before the Cupertino tech giant got to work.

Back in 2018, Microsoft changed the trigger phrase "Hey Cortana" to just "Cortana." Amazon did the exact same thing, dropping "Hey" from "Hey Alexa" for its smart devices. However, Apple's efforts aren't limited to having Siri wake up to "Siri" prompts. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is also working to integrate its voice assistant more deeply into third-party apps and services to ensure Siri takes the right course of action when triggered.

Once these changes take effect, all Siri-enabled Apple devices should be able to use the "Siri" prompt to wake up the voice assistant. Apple's latest effort to improve the Siri experience is some design changes to Apple TV's interface.
