Microsoft brings updated Photos app to Windows 11 Insiders

Microsoft has started rolling out a new Photos app for Dev Channel Insiders running the latest version of Windows 11. As Microsoft says, the updated Photos app has a gorgeous gallery that simplifies browsing, finding, managing and consuming photo collections. However, this is a controlled rollout, which means not all Windows 11 Insiders are currently can use it. The software giant will roll out to more insiders after listening to user feedback.

In addition to being simple and easy to use, the new Photos app has a feature called "Memories," which should show you photos when you tap them. Instead, when you click on a memory, it loads OneDrive on your web browser to show you the photos. This is frustrating for some users, but it's something Microsoft may change in the future.

Another big change in the updated Photos app is the exclusion of the built-in video editor experience found in the older Photos app. Microsoft offers the Clipchamp app on Windows 11 to help users with video editing. If you're new to Windows 11, you can search for the Clipchamp app from the Start menu.

If you're running the Windows Dev Channel Insiders build, you should look for an update for the Photos app (version 2022.31090.16004.0) on the Microsoft Store. After installing the update, it will replace the old Photos app with the current experience. Microsoft also said that the old Photos app will be available as a separate app on the Microsoft Store. Therefore, people who like the old model need not worry at all.

Microsoft has outlined some of the features Insiders can try in the updated Photos app as follows:

  • Organize your photos with an efficient and beautifully redesigned experience.
  • Easily back up your photos to OneDrive and keep your memories safe.
  • Celebrate the good life with an improved Memories experience.
  • Increase productivity with multiple windows and multiple screens.
  • Easily view your OneDrive storage quota usage and add more storage.
  • Import and manage photos from external sources like phones and cameras.
