Apple releases iOS 12.5.6 security update for older iPhones

If you're still holding an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 to save cash on the upcoming iPhone 14 series phones or enjoy the Touch ID Home button, your iPhone is vulnerable to security threats. As long as you update to the latest iOS security patches released by Apple for older iPhones, iPads and iPods, you don't need to worry about this. This latest iOS 12 release patches security threats you didn't know existed.

In the patch notes, Apple said it learned of the issue through a tip that said the vulnerability was being actively used by bad actors. In September 2021, Apple released the iOS 12.5.5 update to address similar issues.

Apple doesn't usually release any updates for its older iOS software, but if it does, it's likely because there's a serious problem, so it's worth taking the time to update the phone. This security fix, brought with iOS 12.5.6, is the ability for malicious websites to create PDFs and apps that run unchecked code on your phone when opened in Safari, Chrome, or other web browsers.

To download and install the update, go to the Settings app, select the General tab, and then select Software Update. If your phone doesn't have enough space for an update, consider deleting some apps, photos, or whatever to clear some storage space on your device.

This iOS update also applies to the iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2 and 3, and iPod Touch 6th generation, so if you have any of these, update now. While these security warnings are nothing to worry about, it's always a good idea to install them in this digital age where data privacy is as low as zero.
