Tutorial : How to add a photo or file to Notes on Mac

You can attach photos, videos, audio files, and other items to notes. If you're using an upgraded iCloud Notes or Notes stored on your Mac, you can also attach map locations and website previews to Notes. (If you haven't upgraded iCloud Notes or aren't using an iCloud account, you can add map or website URLs, but you won't be able to preview them.)

If your note is in an Exchange account, you cannot attach any files, map locations, or website previews to the note.

Add files and images to notes

1. In the Notes app on your Mac, click a note in the notes list or double-click a note in gallery view. You must unlock a locked note before adding attachments.

2. Do any of the following to add attachments:

  • From the desktop: Drag the file into the note.
  • From Photo Library: Drag photos directly from Photo Library into Notes. Or click the Media button in the Notes toolbar, click Photos, then drag a photo from the window that appears.
  • Directly from your iPhone or iPad camera: Click the beginning of the line, choose File > Insert From iPhone or iPad, then choose Take Photo or Scan Document to take a photo or scan a document with your iPhone or iPad and insert it into Notes middle. (Requires macOS 10.14 or later, iOS 12 or later, or iPadOS 13 or later.)
  • Directly from iPhone or iPad: Click the beginning of the line, choose File > Insert From iPhone or iPad, then choose Add Sketch to draw and insert into a note using your finger or Apple Pencil (on iPad) . (Requires macOS 10.15 or later, iOS 13, or iPadOS 13 or later.)

To change the display size of an image, scanned document, or PDF attachment in a note, Control-click the attachment, then choose Display as Large Image or Display as Small Image. You can't change the size of the graffiti in Notes.

Add items from other apps directly to Notes

You can attach items such as map locations or website previews to notes from other apps. You can create a new memo with the attachment, or add attachments to an existing memo.

1. Do any of the following from other apps such as Maps, Safari, Preview, or Photos:

  • Share from the toolbar: Click the Share button, then choose Notes.
Note: The Share button does not appear in all apps.
  • Share from a selection: Select some text or an image, Control-click the selection, then choose Share > Notes.

2. Click Save to add a new note. To add an attachment to an existing note, click the Choose Note pop-up menu, choose a note name, then click Save.

View all memo attachments

You can view all your memo attachments in a single window, making it easier to browse and find the attachments you need. You can view attachments only to upgraded iCloud Notes, or Notes stored on your Mac.

1. In the Notes app on your Mac, choose View > Show Attachment Browser.
Tip: You can add an attachment browser button to the toolbar for quick access. Check out the custom toolbar.

2. Do one of the following:

  • View attachments: Click a category button (such as Photos & Videos, Scans, or Maps) to view different kinds of attachments. To return to the list of notes, choose View > Hide Attachment Browser.
Note: Attachments in locked notes are not displayed in this view, even if you enter your password to unlock the note. This view also doesn't show doodles.
  • Preview attachments: Select the attachment and press the space bar.
  • View the note the attachment is in: Select the attachment, then choose View > Show in Note (or use the Touch Bar).
  • Open an attachment in its default app: Double-click the attachment.
  • Save an attachment: Control-click the attachment, then choose Save Attachment. You cannot use this method to store certain attachments, such as maps and website previews.
  • Rename the attachment: Control-click the attachment, choose Rename Attachment, then type a new name.
  • Share an attachment using another app: Control-click the attachment, choose Share, then choose an app.
