Intel: China’s local chip companies will definitely be competitive in the future

In recent years, a variety of local domestic chips continue to forge ahead and have made great progress, but it is clear that the world's top level is still too far away. So, how do the giants see us?

Recently, Intel senior vice president and chairman of China Wang Rui was asked in an interview with Phoenix's "Cover" program whether China's local chip companies have posed a substantial threat to Intel.

In this regard, Wang Rui frankly said that she very much hopes that the local Chinese companies can appear and Intel compete on the same stage, but Intel will not be polite and will exert its power to compete fairly.

So, when can local Chinese companies form a strong competitive relationship with Intel in the field of chips or core products?

Wang Rui said, 3 years, 5 years or 10 years are possible. In the next 3-5 years, the trend of who can become a strong competitor of Intel by local Chinese companies should gradually become clear.

She said, "Not yet, but I believe that these Chinese companies willing to compete with Intel will be competitive in the future if they are willing to put down deep roots and do a good job of their own design."

Wang Rui also particularly stressed the importance of ecology, pointing out that "only the company that has broken through the ecology can survive.

She confessed: "Intel for so many years why it is difficult to be replaced, in that we are more than a chip. We have been talking about Wintel, that is, together to open up the ecology. In our x86 infrastructure, how much software is open source, open, is the ecology together to do? That's why it's so hard to replace."

At present, domestic mainstream processors can be broadly divided into three routes.

One is Zhaoxin and Haiguang, which adopt the x86 kernel licensing model, with the lowest difficulty in ecological construction, but also the lowest degree of autonomy and controllability.

Second, Longxin and Shenwei, which adopt completely self-developed instruction sets and IP cores, are the most difficult, but can be completely independent.

The third is the use of ARM/RISC-V and other instruction set licensing, independent design core of Feiteng, Huawei Kunpeng, etc., ecological, controllable are between the above two.
